    beautiful laptop…would have given 5star but got a product of radeon graphics instead of the NVIDIA GeForce that i ordered. overall, good product. battery never gets to 100%, dont know why

    I’ve never wrote a review but I needed to for this product. This laptop is terrible, very slow, bad battery life, and not easy to use. On paper the specs look good, but it doesn’t perform. Make sure to spend more money on a reliable device like a MacBook

    While the specs say this is FHD, the laptop display itself is not. You’ll need a second FHD monitor, if this as important to you as it is to me. Very disappointed in this discovery, but otherwise it’s a powerful computer.Also, the OneDrive is on when out of the box which was a little irritating because it kept trying to sync before I was ready. This caused issues, as I’m trying to transfer data from a ten year-old workhorse laptop that is dying.

    Honestly, the laptop is one of the best purchases I’ve made in a while. I was thinking of getting a Macbook but went with this instead after seeing the processor that comes with it.The Ryzen 5 5500U is powerful for what it is. It can do the basics, web browsing, watching movies, processing word documents… but I currently use it for music production when I’m not near my main PC.The iGPU on the laptop isn’t all too great. Performance when playing is not optimal, but it gets the job done. Games such as Fortnite, GTA V, and Fallout 76 run on low settings so I just use Steam Link to play my games whenever I’m connected to Wi-Fi.The battery life is alright. When awake and on a load, it’s a rough 3-4hrs of work. If it’s just sitting doing nothing, it lasts about 8-12hrs. Shutting the laptop screen doesn’t increase battery life though, which I’m kind of disappointed by.If you wanted to know, the laptop is fairly easy to upgrade. Just taking out the rubber feet on the bottom and unscrewing the screws, the bottom clips off easily and you have access to a free RAM slot and the NVMe drive. I swapped the 256GB with a 1TB drive and added an extra 8GB of ram to make it a total of 16GB.

    The wifi card works out of the box from linux kernel version 5.16 onwards. On older kernels, you won’t have wifi during install, which since there’s no ethernet port might sound like a pain, but you can just plug in a phone and use USB tethering to get internet that way. After installing, you’ll need to set up the rtw89 driver using dkms. (On Arch this is painless – just install rtw89-dkms-git. On other distros, the process may be a little more manual, but is well-documented.) I can’t blame HP or the seller for this; the problem is Realtek for failing to get their driver upstreamed in a timely manner, as usual from Realtek. But I stress this problem will be solved in the near future with newer kernels.Suspend works from kernel 5.14. Earlier kernels I tested wouldn’t enter suspend, they’d just sit at a black screen without turning off. So make sure you’re using a recent kernel and you’ll be fine.The biggest pain point is the SSD. Some models of this laptop are sold with a Kioxia disk drive that won’t wake up from suspend. Meaning after suspend the drive disappears. If you run into this (hardware?) bug, you can append iommu=soft to your kernel parameters to fix it. The problem may also possibly disappear in a future kernel version by itself.The only remaining problems are the led built into the mute key, which is supposed to light up when the sound is muted. Personally, I’m glad this is broken and just stays off because it would annoy me if it worked. The blame for this goes squarely to HP; they only had to add literally two lines of code to the linux driver, and they couldn’t be bothered. Also the touchpad randomly freezes on about 1/3 of boots, but that’s a known linux bug with simple workarounds and a fix already written.Other than that it runs linux like a charm. All other features work, including UEFI functionality. It’s lightweight, completely silent under light workload, and the Ryzen 5500U is a bargain. My only criticism is the keyboard and chassis are a wee bit too flexible for my liking.
